Take Back the Night
The Take Back the Night Event is an annual march by women to protest sexual violence. The theme “Take Back the Night” was first used in a women’s protest march in San Francisco in 1978. In 1981, the Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centres proposed that Canadian women hold Take Back the Night events annually on the third Friday in September. The first one held in Newfoundland and Labrador was organized by the St. John’s Rape Crisis Centre in 1985. Today, the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre and Status of Women Councils across the province continue to hold this annual event to protest violence against women.
