Violence Against Women
As Status of Women Councils began opening Women Centres across the province in the 70s and 80s, they began receiving numerous calls from abused women seeking help. It quickly became apparent that violence against women was a key issue that needed to be addressed on a number of levels. Efforts to tackle these concerns included the establishment of the St. Johnís Rape Crisis and Information Centre, a number of transition houses across the province, and the annual Take Back the Night event. Unfortunately, these services and events are still required today.
